Life is full of challenges. We go through unforeseen changes that either leaves us in loss or gain. It is inevitable to live a full life without facing challenges. They could be loss of loved ones, loss of a job, a forced relocation, health issues, etc. Despite the face the challenge may show up in, resilience is vital if we are not to only face up to it but also do it without losing our peace and joy.
Resilience is our ability to bounce back from the misfortunes we face, to adapt and grow in the face of challenges by developing an inner strength that propels us beyond the setbacks. It is not an inborn trait but a skill that can be developed like a muscle using the following strategies;
Growth Mindset – A growth mindset is a positive mindset. Do not face setbacks as failures but as opportunities to learn and as opportunities for personal or professional growth. This does not mean ignoring the negatives, but focusing on the positive aspects of the situation.
Develop a Strong Support System – Create a stronger support than you think you’ll need around you. Having positive and supportive people who will provide you with advice, guidance, emotional support and encouragement is vital to build resilience. They uplift and empower you and help you face your challenges head-on. They could come from your family, friends, colleagues, or experts. You should not shy off from asking for advice.
Self-care – Another strategy involves caring for your physical and mental well-being. Practicing mindfulness through practices like meditation, deep breathes, sleep, etc., and doing physical exercises help with your management of stress and reducing anxiety. When facing challenges in life, these practices help you stay focused and grounded.
Embrace Flexibility and Adaptability – Understanding that life changes constantly, there is dire need to be open to new experiences and perspectives. Adjusting your strategies and plans when you face unplanned changes or challenges shows flexibility. A skill that is crucial to cultivating resilience. Keep options open and do not rule anything out until you are ready to make a decision.
Failure: Understand it – Have a correct understanding of what failure, setbacks or challenges are, not as roadblocks but as opportunities for growth and learning. Consider them as stepping stones to success and they will become a reason for you to bounce back quickly and stronger. Find out what went wrong and consider applying that lesson by focusing on what you need to do differently.
Maintain a Linear Perspective on Your Goal – Always keep the bigger picture in mind even when you are going through challenges. This is crucial to maintain focus on your long-term goal keeping a positive outlook that nothing lasts forever. This too shall pass.
